Pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are welcomed. They settle quickly because staff understand their individual needs.
PSHE
Intent:
The intention of the personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum at Foresters primary School is to enable our children to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of society. We are aware that the delivered curriculum must reflect the needs of our pupils and is accessible to all.
It aims to help our children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and challenges many of the moral, social, and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to our school and the wider community. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about their rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. We expect teachers to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risks and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions in life including the online world.
Implementation:
Our PSHE curriculum has been carefully planned and structured to reflect the needs of our children in line with the National Curriculum. The curriculum is broken into three strands, health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world.
The Scheme of work also includes opportunities to link to British Values and SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development)
The spiral curriculum starts in EYFS as PSED and follows the children from Year 1 through to Year 6. Our spiral curriculum revisit’s themes, gradually extending children’s thinking, expanding their knowledge, and developing their skills.
There are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class, school or within the local community/world. PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become positive citizens in a forever changing world.
We celebrate awareness days and key events during the year to enhance children’s understanding of PSHE statements, such as Jeans for genes day, Children in need. This provides our children with learning and understanding of the wider world issues.
Our children are encouraged to show leadership in our school through student council, sports Leaders, head boy and head girl, also giving our children a voice.
All aims are taught through the three core areas of PSHE and Citizenship education, which are: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. All lessons cover content in an age-appropriate manner.
