Pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are welcomed. They settle quickly because staff understand their individual needs.
Art & Design
Intent
At Foresters Primary School we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s access to a broad and balanced curriculum. Each carefully chosen project aims to provide visual, tactile, and sensory experiences as a creative way of understanding and responding to the world. We provide a programme that fosters children’s personal art skills as well as their knowledge of visual elements, arts forms, artists and art movements. Additionally, as pupils learn about the history, roles and functions of art, they explore its impact on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. Upon leaving Foresters, we want all pupils to view themselves as artists and feel empowered by the many ways they can express themselves creatively.
Implementation
Whilst delivering this curriculum, we ensure art is progressive throughout the years, providing the pupils with new, more complex challenges as their primary age progresses. We implement our intent by:
-
Teaching innovative and engaging lessons which are closely linked to our Art and Design Skills & Knowledge Progression.
-
Following a cornerstones curriculum as a basis to ensure progression and depth of knowledge and skills are clearly identified and covered.
-
Staff modelling and using specific key vocabulary to highlight key knowledge and skills in each project.
-
Children developing and exploring their ideas using personal sketch books, as well as exploring the work of other artists and designers, and evaluating different creative ideas.
-
Creating opportunities for cross-curricular learning and activities to support subject knowledge in different situations e.g. History, Geography, PSHE, and Design and Technology.
-
Encouraging children to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design, as well as doing this to their own and peer’s work.
-
Assessing projects regularly each half term through Cornerstones’ online assessment system, ensuring gaps are identified and filled from previous years, or lessons.
-
Ensuring art is accessible, ambitious and provides cultural capital to all pupils, including pupils with SEND.
-
Provide children with opportunities related to art that contribute to the wider community as well as developing their emotional expression and personal development.

Impact
-
Children can discuss their learning and creative process using key vocabulary and differentiating between skills and knowledge.
-
Children will be able to articulate opinions and evaluate their own and others’ artwork, including that of famous artists, and experience success and pride in many art projects.
-
The children have a progressive, high quality sketch book that will follow them as their art learning journey through their school years.
-
The children exhibit creativity and confidence which can be evident in other areas of the curriculum.
-
Monitoring strategies such as sketch book and floor book studies, learning walks, staff and pupil voice are used by leaders to measure impact of art throughout the school.
-
A school display of artwork and outcomes is updated regularly to celebrate outstanding practice across the school.
